At a Glance

Overseas media employees

Advice for employees of overseas newspapers, news agencies and broadcasting organisations on long-term UK assignments.

Existing sole representatives

Support with eligible extensions, settlement and family applications under the legacy sole representative provisions.

Identify the correct category

The overseas media route remains available to qualifying applicants. The sole representative route is closed to new main applicants, but eligible existing holders can still apply to extend or settle.

We assess your employer, proposed or existing UK role and immigration history before advising on the appropriate application.

Process and Procedure

We coordinate the immigration application with your overseas employment and the relevant UK activities.

  1. Assess the route

Review your role, employer and immigration history.

  2. Plan the application

Identify the correct provisions, timing and any family applications.

  3. Prepare and submit

Help organise supporting material and prepare the application.

  4. Review the decision

Explain the outcome, conditions and next steps.

Overseas Media Representatives

Long-term assignments in the UK

The route covers qualifying employees of overseas newspapers, news agencies or broadcasting organisations posted to the UK on a long-term assignment.

Applying or switching

We assess applications from overseas and eligible switches from within the UK, including whether your current permission allows an in-country application.

The route is tied to the overseas employer and the permitted work. We advise on the application and any proposed changes in employment or circumstances.

Existing Sole Representatives

Extensions for eligible holders

Existing sole representatives may qualify to extend their permission where they continue to meet the relevant provisions. We review the overseas business, UK branch or subsidiary and your continuing role.

Changes to your circumstances

Changes in ownership, business activity or employment can affect eligibility. We assess their impact before advising on an extension or another route.

Businesses seeking to establish a first UK presence should consider the relevant current options, including UK Expansion Worker under Global Business Mobility. This is a separate route with different conditions and settlement implications.

Your Partner and Children

Joining or remaining together

Advice on eligible partner and child applications, including extensions and permitted switches.

Individual eligibility

Each family member’s permission and circumstances need to be considered separately.

Coordinate expiry dates and applications

Extending the main applicant’s permission does not automatically extend a dependant’s visa. We help plan the family’s applications around their individual deadlines.

Children born in the UK and children approaching adulthood need separate consideration, including any nationality or travel implications.

Settlement and Next Steps

Settlement under the current rules

Eligible representatives may qualify for settlement after the relevant qualifying period, normally five years, subject to the applicable residence, employment and other requirements. We assess your history and continuing role individually.

Settlement for family members

Dependants must meet their own requirements. Settlement for the main applicant does not automatically grant settlement to a partner or child.

British citizenship is a separate application

After settlement, nationality eligibility must be assessed separately. Citizenship is not automatically granted through this route.
