What is Indefinite Leave to Remain?

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), also known as settlement, grants you permanent residence in the UK. Once obtained, you can live and work in the UK without any time restrictions and without needing to renew your visa. ILR is also the final step before applying for British citizenship.

Qualifying Routes

You can apply for ILR after a qualifying period on certain visa routes — typically 5 years on the Skilled Worker, Family, Innovator Founder, or other eligible routes. Some routes offer accelerated settlement (e.g., Global Talent in 3 years, Investor in 2 years historically).

Key Requirements

Continuous Residence — You must not have been absent from the UK for more than 180 days in any 12-month period.

Life in the UK Test — You must pass the Life in the UK test.

English Language — B1 level in speaking and listening.

No Criminal Record — No unspent criminal convictions.

Salary (Skilled Worker) — Must be earning the minimum salary threshold at the time of ILR application.
