International Sportsperson

A sponsored UK work route for internationally established elite athletes and qualified sports coaches contributing to their sport at its highest level.

At a Glance

Athletes and coaches

The route is for eligible elite sportspersons and qualified coaches who are internationally established. We assess the proposed role and the relevant sport’s endorsement arrangements.

Endorsement and sponsorship

A governing-body endorsement and a Certificate of Sponsorship from an authorised employer are separate parts of the application. We help coordinate the immigration aspects with your club or organisation.

Permission suited to the engagement

Permission can be granted for up to three years, with further applications possible while the conditions continue to be met. Applications for twelve months or less and longer grants have different considerations.

This route replaced Sportsperson (T2) and the sporting part of the former Temporary Worker Creative and Sporting route. Earlier permissions should be reviewed when planning the next application.

Process and Procedure

We assist with overseas applications and eligible switches from within the UK, coordinating the endorsement, sponsored engagement and immigration stages.

  1. Assess the sporting engagement

Review your profile, proposed role, governing-body arrangements, sponsor and immigration history, including any family applications.

  2. Coordinate endorsement and sponsorship

We advise on the immigration requirements and help align the governing-body endorsement and employer’s sponsorship arrangements.

  3. Prepare and submit the visa application

We assist with the application, supporting information and the required identity checks, keeping the stages and timing aligned.

  4. Decision and career planning

Review the decision and conditions, coordinate family arrangements and plan any later renewal, club move or settlement application.

Switching and timing

Switching depends on your current UK immigration status and the relevant conditions. Proposed start dates should be considered alongside endorsement, sponsorship and the visa decision.

Visa, healthcare, professional and document costs should be considered together. We can advise on the application service appropriate to your circumstances.

Club and Employer Changes

Moving to another club or organisation

A change of sponsored employer normally requires a new immigration application and sponsorship arrangements. Governing-body endorsement should also be reviewed for the proposed engagement.

We can assess the move and advise on the timing and permission required before you begin the new role.

Other sporting and professional activity

  • Additional work is subject to conditions and may require a separate sponsored application.
  • National-team activity and sports broadcasting have specific permitted-work provisions.
  • Study must not interfere with the sponsored job, and starting or running a business is not permitted on this route.

Get advice promptly if your sponsored engagement ends or the employer’s licence changes, so that your continuing permission and available options can be reviewed.

Dependant Partners and Children

Who can accompany you?

Partner

A qualifying spouse, civil partner or unmarried partner may apply to join you or remain with you in the UK, subject to the applicable relationship conditions.

Children

Eligible dependent children can apply, including certain older children with existing dependant permission. Each child’s circumstances need individual review.

Planning your family’s applications

  • Each family member needs a separate application and eligibility assessment.
  • Applications may be coordinated with yours or considered later, depending on your circumstances.
  • An extension or change to your own permission does not automatically update family members’ visas.
  • Family settlement has its own qualifying periods and conditions.

Extensions and Earlier Permissions

Continuing your sporting career

An extension requires renewed governing-body endorsement and a new Certificate of Sponsorship. Further permission can be granted for up to three years at a time while the relevant conditions are met.

We can review the continued engagement, application timing and any family renewals before existing permission expires.

Earlier Sportsperson and sporting-worker grants

Earlier Sportsperson (T2), Tier 2 or sporting-worker history may affect the next application and longer-term planning. These former routes are not presented as new application options; we assess how existing grants fit within the current rules.

Settlement and Citizenship

Settlement under the current rules

A potential settlement application can arise after five qualifying years, subject to the relevant residence, sponsorship, employment and other conditions. At least one qualifying grant must have been for longer than twelve months.

Your residence and family position

The periods that count towards settlement need individual review, especially where different sports or work routes have been held. Partners and children have separate eligibility conditions.

Plan beyond the current contract

Completing five years alone does not establish eligibility. We review the qualifying grants, absences, continued employment and the requirements applying at the settlement stage.

British citizenship is a separate application

Naturalisation has its own residence, absence, language, good-character and other conditions. Neither sports endorsement, visa permission nor settlement guarantees citizenship.
